END PLAY SHIMS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. To measure end play:
a. Bolt case halves together using only 2 large nuts. Be
sure to use a washer under nuts.
b. Bolt flywheel or flywheel end piece on to crankshaft. Torque to 217 ft. lbs. A flywheel lock tool will greatly aide holding the flywheel steady. A flywheel end piece that will not be driving a prop only has to be torqued to 150 lbs.
c. Using feeler gauges, measure the space between the back of #1 bearing and flywheel. The paper gasket must be in place on the 4 or 8 dowel pins.
2. After finding the correct end play shims, insert them in to the space between the rear of the #1 bearing and the flywheel to confirm size by inserting a .004" feeler gauge in ahead of the shim pack and rotate the flywheel. Try larger and smaller feeler gauges to confirm you have the correct setting.
3. Bolt the case back together and remove the flywheel.
NOTE: The flywheel should be torqued to 217 ft. lbs. Be sure to use Locktite on the gland nut. If you are using an 8 dowel crankshaft, do not use a stock gland nut washer - order a Great Plains 8d washer.
